Looking for all voices, but particularly women's voices! Strong sightreading required.
This young chamber choir is open by audition to new members of all voice ranges (SATB incl countertenor) who love the musical tradition of the English cathedrals or wish to get to know it, who have choral singing experience, and possess excellent musical and reading skills.
Regular choir rehearsals take place weekly on Thursdays, 18:30-20:45 in the Berliner Dom. Special rehearsals are sometimes necessary. Given the fast pace at which the choir prepares new music, a high level of commitment to rehearsals and performances is expected. Good musical skills, especially reading, are a must. Familiarity with the repertoire is beneficial but not essential.
We are a very international group of singers. Our working language tends to be English but nearly everyone also speaks German.
Our musical focus is on a cappella or accompanied anthems and liturgy settings as used in cathedrals and concert halls around the world. Such music includes, for example, settings of Choral Evensong, Choral Mattins, sung masses, and other services such as Lessons & Carols. The musical focus permits a huge range of choral works by the great classical composers and includes, of course, the much-loved Tudor masters, see 'Repertoire'.
Currently, the English Choir Berlin sings choral evensong monthly in the Berliner Dom on Saturdays, 18:00-19:00. Choral Evensong or Choral Eucharist is also sung from time to time at the Anglican Sunday evening services in the large Gothic St. Marienkirche (Alexanderplatz near the TV tower). In addition, the choir sings occasionally in other Berlin churches. Other services and concerts are continually being arranged for other venues both in Berlin and in other cities (see ‘Upcoming Performances’). The choir has travelled to Paris, Wittenberg, Dresden and Rostock to sing choral evensong, masses and concerts.
Interested singers should contact Kathleen Bird (conductor) by phone at either +49 (0)162 710 7516 or (cell) +49 (0)30 30205074 or send an email to: englishchoirberlin@gmail.com
